Unattended cooking oil starts Syracuse apartment fire
Sun. Jan 31st 2010

A woman who left her cooking oil unattended on the stove started a fire that gutted her Syracuse apartment this afternoon, city firefighters said.

Alonda Gaiter, 21, of 216 Crippen Ave., Apt. 5, started heating some oil to fry fish and went into the hallway to chat with a neighbor, said fire investigator Lt. Ken Heffernan.

She smelled smoke and saw the fire, grabbed her 2-year-old child and evacuated, Heffernan said.

No one was injured in the fire. None of the other five apartments were damaged, he said.

The Red Cross has offered to provide shelter to Gaiter and her child.
